    Stella’s Notch

    February 23rd, 2008

Last night, I was invited to check out a show at the Whiskey in Hollywood. I was able to catch a handful of bands of all different sounds. Some really good, some not so great. My favorite set for the night was Stella’s Notch. The sound was pretty amazing and I wish I had been able to capture some of it on video to share with you all! You can search on YouTube for some, but there aren’t many, cuz’ I guess they are a fairly new band, although the band members are not new to the scene. From what I hear, their lead singer, Melody, was pretty big a couple years ago in the Philippines as the lead vocalist for a band called Sugar Hiccup.

Back to last night’s show…the sound was overall great despite the occasional feedback, the energy was great, Melody looked hot, and it was pretty cool that they brought on a guest violinist, a taiko drummer (from the previous set’s Random Ninjas), and a real belly dancer! Yup, it was pretty wild. Oh, and turns out that last night was their official album release. They definitely put on a great show for their debut!

Anyway, I’m actually listening to their album, Beyond Wonderland, as I type this. It’s really great. Highly recommended.

I’m outting that Closet Polar Bear…

    February 11th, 2008

So I have this co-worker who my other co-workers and I think is secretly a ninja assassin. Well…she’s not. But! She’s actually a drummer in this really cool ska band called Half Past Two.

    halfpasttwo.jpg

I happened to catch an acoustic set of theirs (something very rare for them and perhaps not as high-energy) at 2nd Street Jazz in Little Tokyo not too long ago. I had actually heard their EP before seeing them live and already knew that their music was good. I think though, because they were performing acoustic, it wasn’t as fun as I imagined (I imagined a large polar bear pounding a snare drum running amuck with a marching band on an after school special or something like that). Oh well, I will def have to catch them when they play with their electric gear!

Anyway, some really cool news about them:

    1. They will be playing a couple of shows in NorCal with Reel Big Fish next month!

    2. Their song, “We Want More” premiered on KROQ last night on the Furious Five at Nine. Check out the song on their Myspace and if you like it, you can vote for them here: http://www.kroq-data.com/ffatnine/index.asp or call in to 1-800-520-1067 and request “We Want More” by Half Past Two!

P.S. - Closet Polar Bear is the band’s 5-song EP. I’m not quite sure what the whole meaning behind it is…but they seem to have a thing for polar bears…

Did you Rock the Vote today?

    February 5th, 2008

I did, but I didn’t cast a vote for any of the presidential candidates. Honestly, it’s been hard keeping up with all the politics going on in this year’s madness with all the different candidates. Most people I know are pro-Obama, but I’m not quite sold.

Regardless, this is kind of a cool video put together by Will.i.am from the Black Eyed Peas in support of Barack Obama’s campaign:

    Fake Boobs and what else?

    February 5th, 2008

The reality of Reality TV is that most of it’s fake.

Yah, this is going to sound hater-ish, but take “A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila.” Who is Tila Tequila? How did she get so famous? No doubt she has had the most friends on Myspace and had the #1 downloaded music video on iTunes the day it released (of course, all she does in the video is dance around in underwear), but why is she MTV’s biggest thing right now? Is it because she was really a frustrated “bisexual” who wanted to find true love so she and her peeps went to MTV to pitch a show? Or perhaps somebody at MTV knew who she was (via Myspace fame) and thought they could profit off of her (which they did…6.2 million viewers and all)? I really don’t know who approached who with the show, but I do know from an inside source that Tila had a boyfriend before and during the production of “A Shot at Love.” And now after Googling it a bit, I see other sources saying the same thing. The NY Post has even called her a “closet straight.” Bah, I can’t believe there’s going to be a 2nd season… *sigh*…MTV, MTV…you just keep going more and more downhill.

Sometimes I feel like Reality TV is a reflection of how crappy and shallow our society has become.

    YouTube…matchmaker for musicians?

    December 19th, 2007

What if your favorite band contacted you out of the blue and asked you to be in their band?

    http://www.journeymusic.com/index2.html

Yup, that’s Journey’s official website with an announcement of their new lead singer whom they discovered through YouTube. Crazy, huh? I think it’s pretty cool. Arnel Pineda, the new singer, says he didn’t believe it at first when he was contacted on YouTube by Neal Schon from Journey. I mean, I’d probably be skeptical, too, with all the spammers out there.

Anyway, congratulations, Arnel Pineda! What happened to you is pretty freakin’ awesome.

Pineda is from a band in the Philippines called The Zoo. Here’s the cover of “Faithfully” that got Journey’s attention:
