    Together we’ll mend your heart

Of all the versions of “Umbrella” (damn you Rihanna for bringing this horrifically catchy tune into our collective popular consciousness), this one’s my favorite. Ignore the shitty slideshow video.

Here’s a New Year’s tip: As long as you aren’t married, your parents are supposed to give you money. If you are, tough luck. I expect my red envelope soon.

I’ve been hella listening to A Fine Frenzy. You know how some people get hella hype on the Internet, making you want not to listen to it and love just for the sake of being obstinate? Oh, that’s just me? Okay. Well. The fine music of Alison Sudol was that for me, until I accidentally downloaded this song and then immediately got the rest of the marvelous album One Cell In The Sea. I know no one uses the word marvelous. But this shit is amazing. Her voice, the lyrics, the piano and other instrumentation. No one I’ve shared songs with has disliked it this thus far.

Also, heads up - Thao Nguyen and the Get Down Stay Down’s album We Brave Bee Stings And All just dropped. They’ll be touring with Xiu Xiu in the spring. I’ll see none of you at the Echo April 11, but it’ll be rad none the less!

    Best of Pt. 1

    December 25th, 2007

Anyone started doing a Best Of 07 list yet? I’ve never been able to keep track of my listening habits for a month, let alone a full year, so you won’t be getting it from me. But my buddy Chris has put one up at his music blog, gravitas kills, and damned if I don’t agree with #15 (of 20:

“I tried to resist putting this album on my list. I just couldn’t. This album was damn near everywhere this year. I’d imagine it was licensed almost as many times as the Wilco album was and that wasn’t even the surprising part. The really surprising part is how long it took everyone else to catch on. Watch this and tell me that you didn’t see it coming. Does something seem familiar about this video and this song? IT’S A DAMN GAP AD. DO YOU REMEMBER THOSE KHAKIS YOU HAVE IN YOUR CLOSET? CAN YOU REMEMBER FINDING THEM A FEW YEARS AGO, THINKING, “WHY DID I EVER BUY THESE? I GUESS IT WAS THE 90s.” HOW ELSE DO YOU THINK THEY’RE SELLING IPODS?”

Hope y’all are having a good holiday, eating Chinese food or going to church or filing your nails. Whatever. At my house it’s actually all three.

The crescendo of the melody I love

I just don’t know why she isn’t bigger than she is.

Esthero is from Canada. The Black Eyed Peas wanted her. She’s fucking amazing, feminist, incredible voice, so femme I thought she was trans when I discovered her in high school. Yes, that’s Sean Lennon performing with her in the video. He wrote this song. They’re tight.
And because I feel like it, an official video by her of another of my favorite songs, We R In Need Of A Musical Revolution. Listen, f’real. Sometimes I blast this on the freeway at 2 AM, just a small way of reminding myself that music and love will be the greatest fuel of the revolution.

Thao Nguyen is just too wonderful for words, the folksiest folk you will ever love. Here she is performing “What About” live with the Get Down Stay Down at the Black Cat in Washington D.C. Their new album will be out January 29 on Kill Rock Stars. Hit up Myspace and her website for some free songs.

    Not fun

    October 23rd, 2007

    Southern California is on fire.

You may have seen it on the news, or the Internet, or even the radio, if you’re that old school. From the south of Santa Barbara down into Mexico, much as CNN likes to say that the imaginary line called the border limits our concern, wildfires, smog, smoke, embers. It’s fucking scary as shit, and myself, my family, and my friends are in the middle of it.

I’m in San Diego and have had to leave my home. Not to be dramatic, and I’m not looking for sympathy, because I’m safe and healthy and so are my roommates and close friends in this area. I’ll be heading to L.A. tonight, since school was cancelled for the rest of the week.

But others aren’t so lucky. There are currently 12 fires in the San Diego area, and almost all are zero percent contained. 300,000 people have been displaced and the number only grows. That’s not including all the pets and animals from the more rural areas of the south, also crowded into the 23 evacuation centers.

Please, if you are at all able, whether you live in Cali or not, visit www.sdarc.org, the website for San Diego’s American Red Cross, and make a donation, be it monetary, of blood, or of necessary items such as toiletries, pillows, and sleeping bags for the thousands sleeping on the floor of Qualcomm Stadium, of the Del Mar Fairgrounds, of the various high schools that have closed their doors to classes and opened them to the community. If you yourself are anywhere in the southland that’s being affected by the smoke and air quality, wear something over your face and avoid going outdoors if you can (ESPECIALLY the north part of L.A. and all of Orange County).

    Peace, love, and solidarity.

Persephone and her Cellar Babies is Frances Chang, who recorded a harmonic mix of vocals, guitar, and unexpected synthetic instrumentals in the basement of her dorm to create the excellent album “We Took It By The Hand”. Her warm voice and creative tunes have made this one of my best and most unexpected albums of the year. Take a listen to Fire Escape, close your eyes, and imagine eating cotton candy and rolling around in the grass while rain drenches you and your best friend.
