you know who’s brilliant..Doom is brilliant
May 31st, 2008
The collaborations between MF Doom (or just Doom as he goes by now) and just about anyone he works with produces some of the most creative and ingenious hip hop i’ve ever heard. Case in point, i just picked up the Danger Doom Cd (it was released in 2005) and was blown away by the collab between Danger Mouse and Doom. AND..ANDDD they mixed it with Adult Swim, having various characters provide a back drop for the songs. You got Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Brak, and Sealab 2021 rapping along side Doom. In particular, on one of my favorite tracks “Old School”, it’s Doom featuring Talib Kweli going back and forth about saturday morning cartoons.

“I was, makin up a miracle flow, over a cereal bowl,
And a paused beat from my stereo,
Rhymes stronger than Popeye with the spinach.”
While on the topic, although they’ve calmed down a little on it, Adult Swim’s close connection with hip hop has been historic. They’ve down records with the Stones Throw label and sponsor hip hop shows. A few years ago they even had the evil genius Doom host a Holiday show. Some may argue there isn’t anything hip hop about Adult Swim. hellll no. The wonderfully independent minds of Adult Swim push the limits of creativity with everything they do. The truly independent hip hop scene is the perfect compliment to the mix. Push them records- pick em up!
They say my name Wa-L-E
February 21st, 2008This post has been months in the making. DC rapper WALE is bigggg. He’s doing huge things right now. Being Mark Ronson’s hand picked protege just solidifys his place within Hip Hop up and comers. Many people are comparing him to Kanye and Lupe when they first launched. I believe it. Although he’s defintely got his own swagger and style (much different the lupe and kanye), the hype around him is comparable.
Check out his myspace page at myspace.com/wale202. he’s got a free mixtape you can jam on (also Rhymefest has got a mixtape you can download too!!). Personal favorites are the remix of Rehab, WALEDANCE, and Good Girls.

February 21st, 2008Dance rock outfit The Slants have stolen my heart. They’re on tour right now and will be traveling down the west coast. make sure you come check them out. In response to their …seemingly offensive name (they are Asian American):t
Isn’t the band name, “THE SLANTS” an offensive racial slur?
Yes and no. It’s amazing that the only people that seem to be offended by this term are non-Asians! We’re proud of who we are and aren’t afraid to say that ‘yes, we do have slanted eyes.’ Although we aren’t a socio-political band, we do feel strongly that Asians should be proud of their cultural heriatge, and not be offended by stereotypical descriptions. Stand proud, stand strong - it is why our strongest support comes from the Asian community itself!
Check out their music at Myspace.com/theslants
What Am I?!
January 5th, 2008Funniest thing I’ve seen in the new year so far. The rest of the year is going to have a hard time topping this. To set up the video. Just imagine if your toys came to life. But..really came to life.
Comedy Group ThoseLilRabbits have some other HELLA funny videos up including a very very realistic David Blaine parody. Future rockstars in their own right in the realm of comedy.

For those with a little extra holiday cash i highly recommend going over to EvilMonito.com. Although I’m a poor college student, I just had to pick up the Evil Monito “Keeping It Local” tee as well as an issue of Made Magazine with KAWS on the cover. But lucky you, they are having a blow out sale with some GREAT price cuts on a number of items.
One of the newer items that caught my eye (and my wallet) was a Haze (famous graffiti artist) silkscreen poster. They’re limited edition and signed by the artist. If you have the money, I’d much appreciate you buying me one immediately.
More on Haze. I’m ridiculously obsessed with his work at this moment. You can check out some of his tees and hats at cmonwealth.com I’d also much appreciate you buying me these items as well.
There WILL be blood!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
January 2nd, 2008
I’m a huge fan of Paul Thomas Anderson ever since i first saw “Magnolia.” Although I wouldn’t consider myself an expert on the man’s life (I still haven’t seen Boogie Nights), i’m still a avid viewer and an excited one at that. He tends to tackle pretty dark subject matter (porn, death, etc) and has a very distinct style to his movies. He’s like Kevin Smith with well thought out dialouge or Bahz Luhrman with kick ass imagery.
In either case, although not a real rockstar, and not quite fitting the term “Future,” PT Anderson’s new film “There will be blood” still needs to be hyped as much as possible. Set at the turn of the century when oil prospectors roamed the country, his film focuses on Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day-Lewis) as he goes from town to town in search of oil. Much of the movie centers on the Plainview character and the developments that he goes through.
For the sake of FR*A, MUSIC alert! Jonny Greenwood (The guitarist for Radiohead) is the composer for the film bringing eerie horror film like scores throughout the movie.
It’s only out in limited release right now, so those in the LA area should take a first crack at the movie while you have the chance. Don’t know when it’s opening up in more theaters, so if you happen to know, do us all a favor and leave a comment!
(LAST NOTE- the poster up above is very bad ass. Very)
The Coolest
December 19th, 2007
Lupe Fiasco AKA the best hip hop artist currently alive just dropped his second LP, The Cool, yesterday. How does it stack up to the hype? Stacks up quite well I would say.
It’s a dark album full of criticisms of today’s mainstream rap, politics, war, and the like. A wide departure from the usual mainstream rap we hear today, his lyricism blows my mind every time I listen to him flow. I loved the first single “Superstar” and have been listening to it religiously since it first dropped a few months ago. Eagerly awaiting the supposed November release date, I was a little irritated that it got pushed back until December. But…now that I have it, it was well worth the wait and am already overplaying it on my stereo. Tracks in particular to check out are “Gotta Eat,” (from the perspective of a hamburger), “Hello/Goodbye,” and “Paris Tokyo.”
He’s on tour starting in January so for all those out there I’d cop tickets soon from ticketmaster before they start to sell out. In particular I will be at the show in Anaheim on January 14th. To the first 3 people that come and find me and say the words “Future Rockstars of America” and I’ll buy you something nice…probably a drink if your over 21. I’ll be rockin’ the FR*A t-shirt. Hope to see ya there!
